Launching Critical Care: How Medicus Helped Establish an Intensivist Program in Rural Oklahoma

Written by Medicus Healthcare Solutions | Nov 25, 2025 3:00:01 PM

Without a formal intensivist program, a rural hospital in Oklahoma struggled to care for high-acuity patients, resulting in patient transfers to outside facilities and a loss of revenue. With recruitment challenges in attracting full-time intensivists to rural Oklahoma and a lack of well-defined processes and workflows to present to prospective candidates, hospital leadership turned to the Medicus Transition Program to help launch a new intensivist program and secure coverage until permanent candidates were secured.

"The Medicus Transition Program allowed us to provide high-quality critical care physician support to our ICUs quickly and efficiently. Medicus also enabled us to implement multiple quality improvements, including enhanced communication through critical care physician team rounds, reduced ICU length of stay, and the development of new policies and procedures that have made our ICU more efficient. We couldn't be more pleased with the success of this recent program." -Administrative Director
