HOSPITAL PROFILE

A 236-bed, Level II trauma facility in eastern Texas received limited notice that their local orthopedic trauma group would be departing the program. Executive leadership engaged Medicus Healthcare Solutions to fully staff the program so they could focus on securing permanent providers and simultaneously launching an outpatient rehabilitation clinic.

CLIENT SCENARIO

A group that had been staffing the facility provided a 60-day notice of departure without leaving any signed full-time providers. Since the hospital is located on the side of a highway in a farming community, they are the only facility well-equipped to handle severe cases and high velocity impact patients. However, without their program being fully staffed, they would face:

  • Increased attrition and difficulty attracting permanent staff
  • Inability to care for their unique patient population
  • Delayed launch of their outpatient rehabilitation clinic
  • Significant loss of revenue

MEDICUS SOLUTION

Executive leadership sought Medicus’ Transition Management services to help mobilize the program. Within 60 days, we identified proper project-based providers to stabilize the program and achieve 100% coverage. Through our Transition service, we delivered a solution that included:

  • Assessing the structure of the program, the facility’s goals, and their unique patient population
  • Identifying, contracting, credentialing, and onboarding specialized providers who were already experienced with high intensity case loads
  • Empowering internal resources to focus on permanent recruitment and shorten the life cycle of our locums program

RESULTS

As a result of our services, the program remained fully staffed and stable, consistently transitioning from full time to locum providers and back without diminishing outcomes. After 10 months, the department stabilized with a new team of full-time physicians, regaining internal control and autonomy. The Medicus Solution:

  • Staffed a team of doctors to cover 20 shifts, 30 orthopedic surgeries, and 100 trauma cases per month without loss of revenue
  • Preserved the integrity of the facility’s orthopedic trauma program
  • Provided adequate support to allow staff to secure and onboard full-time providers
  • Helped simultaneously launch an outpatient rehabilitation center
  • Enabled the facility to expand their footprint within the patient population they served and establish continuity of care
