Celebrating National Physicians Week: Medicine and More
As we gear up to celebrate National Doctors Day on March 30th, we're highlighting and honoring an initiative that began nine years ago: National Physicians Week. The founder of Physicians Working Together (PWT), Dr. Kimberly Jackson, established this week-long celebration to extend the recognition of National Doctors Day and show appreciation for physicians' outstanding contributions and selfless dedication to others.
This year, National Physicians Week's theme, "Medicine and More in 2024," spotlights doctors' multifaceted roles and medical achievements beyond healthcare. It reminds us of the importance of honoring and recognizing the hard work and dedication of physicians who are not only exceptional healthcare providers but also innovators, educators, researchers, and community leaders.
Physician Workforce
While this week recognizes and appreciates the invaluable contributions physicians make to communities every day, it also offers an opportunity to shed light on their challenges. Despite the 1 million active physicians who treat over 1 billion people annually, the United States faces a shortage of physicians, with projections indicating a deficit ranging from 37,800 to 124,000 by 2034. These shortages can result in increased workloads and longer hours, further intensifying physician burnout.
Addressing Physician Burnout
This week also serves as a platform to recognize and advocate for policies that prioritize the well-being of physicians, including addressing burnout and promoting work-life balance. In 2024, burnout affected 49% of physicians, with excessive work hours being one of the leading factors, as doctors typically spend over 50 hours per week at work. By supporting and empowering physicians, we can ensure that they continue to provide high-quality care to patients and make lasting contributions to the field of medicine.
Locum Tenens Physicians
Locum tenens physicians play a pivotal role in alleviating burnout among permanent providers while offering flexibility and balance to those who choose this path. Around 52,000 doctors work locum tenens nationwide, providing crucial support to healthcare facilities and ensuring continuous access to care for communities all across the country. At Medicus, we are proud to collaborate with a diverse network of dedicated locum tenens physicians who travel nationwide to ensure access to health care.
Thank you, Physicians!
Thank you, physicians, for your unwavering compassion, expertise, and dedication to improving the health and well-being of individuals across the nation.
